Tobacco Retail License Postcard –
Martinez, CA

Project Overview

As part of a public awareness effort by Contra Costa Health, this postcard was created to educate Martinez residents about the outdated local tobacco retail policy and its impact on youth vaping. The postcard served as both an educational piece and a tool for community members to take immediate action by signing and submitting it to city council.

My Role

I led the concept development, messaging strategy, copywriting, and visual design of the postcard. I worked closely with the public health team to incorporate relevant data, community quotes from Population Intercept Surveys, and a clear, compelling call to action. I ensured the final piece was approachable, easy to sign, and emotionally resonant for parents and community members.

The Impact

The postcard helped build grassroots support for strengthening Martinez’s Tobacco Retail License (TRL) policy. It gave concerned residents a voice and an easy way to participate in the policy process. By aligning visual storytelling with strategic messaging, the piece amplified local advocacy efforts and reinforced the urgent need to protect youth from targeted tobacco industry tactics.

Why It Matters

Youth vaping is on the rise, and the tobacco industry continues to exploit gaps in local policy to market flavored products to kids. Martinez’s outdated TRL policy left the door open for flavored vapes to remain accessible, putting an entire generation at risk. This postcard served as a critical tool to mobilize community voices, helping residents understand the issue and advocate for change. When public health policy lags behind industry tactics, clear, compelling communication like this can spark action and drive reform.
